PROVOCATIVE SONGS : PARADISE LOST-FOREVER FAILURE

The anniversary release of lp Draconian Times for the 25 years since its release reached my hands last week. One of its strongest moments is the song Forever Failure. One of the highlights of Forever Failure that made it stand out was the use of a sample from the voice of the infamous Charles Manson sect leader who bloodied Hollywwod in the late 60’s, both in the beginning and in the middle of the track. As soon as I heard it again, the time machine took me back to Drapetsona in 1996 and the Festival Rock of Gods, where the voice of Charles Manson was heard through the speakers announcing one of the loudest moments of the Festival. Paradise Lost in the peak moment of their career under the hot Greek sun raised the dock 3.
Paradise Lost guitarist Gregor Mackintosh remembered: “We thought that the breakdown section, the little acoustic bit, needed something in there,” says Gregor. “We had just watched this Charles Manson documentary, The Man Who Killed the Sixties, and there was this really poignant bit where he sums the whole documentary up and we thought that we should use it. I had no idea it was going to be such a ballache to get, but we got it and put it in the song. What we didn’t realise is that, to get that on there, we had to effectively pay the families of his victims royalties from the song. And we’ve been doing that ever since.”
Following is the performance of the song from the Draconian Times lp, the official video clip where there is no introduction with the voice of Charles Manson, as well as the recorded appearance of Paradise Lost at Rock of Gods, in Drapetsona at Pier 3 in 1996.

Η επετειακή κυκλοφορία του lp Draconian Times για τα 25 χρόνια από την κυκλοφορία του έφτασε στα χέρια μου την προηγούμενη εβδομάδα. Μια από τις πιο δυνατές στιγμές του είναι το Forever Failure. Ένα από τα στοιχεία που απογειώνει το Forever Failure και το κάνει να ξεχωρίζει ήταν η χρήση ενός δείγματος από την φωνή του διαβόητου Charles Manson ηγέτη της αίρεσης που αιματοκύλησε το Hollywwod στα τέλη των 60’s, τόσο στην αρχή όσο και στη μέση του κομματιού. Αμέσως μόλις το ξανάκουσα η μηχανή του χρόνου με πήγε στο 1996 στη Δραπετσώνα και το Festival Rock of Gods, όπου η φωνή του Charles Manson ακούστηκε από τα ηχεία προαναγγέλοντας μια από τις πιο δυνατές στιγμές του Festival. Οι Paradise Lost στην κορυφαία στιγμή της καριέρας τους κάτω από τον καυτό ελληνικό ήλιο ξεσήκωναν την αποβάθρα 3.
Ο κιθαρίστας των Paradise Lost, Gregor Mackintosh αναφέρει: «Σκεφτήκαμε ότι η εισαγωγή του Forever Failure χρειαζόταν κάτι επιπλέον. Μόλις είχαμε παρακολουθήσει το ντοκιμαντέρ για τον Charles Manson, Ο άνθρωπος που σκότωσε τη δεκαετία του εξήντα, και υπήρχε αυτό το πραγματικά συγκλονιστικό κομμάτι όπου συνοψίζει ολόκληρο το ντοκιμαντέρ και σκεφτήκαμε ότι έπρεπε να το χρησιμοποιήσουμε. Δεν είχα ιδέα ότι θα ήταν τόσο απίστευτο, αλλά το πήραμε και το βάλαμε στο τραγούδι. Αυτό που δεν καταλάβαμε είναι ότι, για να το καταφέρουμε, έπρεπε να πληρώσουμε ουσιαστικά στις οικογένειες των θυμάτων του δικαιώματα από το τραγούδι. Και αυτό το κάνουμε από τότε».
